Vintage hand carved pendant / necklace of Chiapan amber if Mexico. Mexican amber is not as well known as Baltic amber, but it is harder and 22 to 30 million years old. Older pieces like this are highly collected.
This one is a a huge scarabthat has deep carving and is set with two turquoise stones. There is a carved eye inside of a triangle on the back. The scarab is pierced and has a silver rode through it on which a large wire work bail is attached. The frame, bail, beads and clasp are all sterling silver. The black cording feels like nylon. The clasp is marked 925 and has a Taxco mark TH-45. The pendant is 3" long with the bail, 2 1/8" wide. Necklace is 34" long. Weight: 41.7 grams.
Note: It has some chippy edges that are rounded and worn as well as a high amount of carving which makes is hard to tell what is carved and what is chippy. It needs to be cleaned. Has fantastic inclusions.
