Vintage hand carved pendant / necklace of
Chiapan amber if Mexico. Mexican amber is not as well known as Baltic amber, but it is harder and 22 to 30 million years old. Older pieces like this are highly collected.
This one is a human head with a tiger headdress. The tiger has turquoise eyes and bone teeth. The human has earrings of butterscotch amber. The frame, bail, beads and clasp are all sterling silver. The black cording feels like nylon. The clasp is marked 925 and Mexico. There is a hallmark on the back of the bail. the pendant is 2 3/8" long without the bail, 1 3.4" wide and with the bail it is 2 7/8" long. Necklace is 34" long. Weight: 52.2 grams
Note: the nose looks in the photos like it is chipped. It isn't. This amber has many inclusions and there is one in the nose area, The right side is included and the left is much darker.
