Very Rare 1950s Navajo Mark Chee Sterling Silver Bolo Tie Belt Buckle Set
Very Rare 1950s Navajo Mark Chee Sterling Silver Bolo Tie Belt Buckle Set.
Mark's work is usually found set with turquoise in traditional Navajo themes.
This set is done Hopi style in the layered silver overlay technique in the design of Rainbowman.
This set was purchased form the son of the original owner. It was purchased new in the late 1940s or early 1950s.
The bolo is on original black braided leather. It is a bit stiff, but was not worn much and could be dampened and hung to be straightened. Slide has Rainbowman and corn. Measures 2 3/8" by 1 3/4". Tips have higan ends and are stamp decorated. Sterling silver as well. Measure 2 1/4" long.
Buckle set has one slide and one tip. Buckle has a matching Rainbowman with corn. Measures 2 1/4" square. For a belt that is 3/4" wide. (Typical of the late 1940s or 1950s) Guide and tip have yei figures.
Entire set weighs 86 grams.
I have not been able to find another example of Mark's work in overlay.
The buckle and bolo are both hallmarked.
I will not break up the set. They have always been together.
Have not been cleaned or polished to preserve the original patina.
