Vintage Hawaiian Puka Shell Necklace

Vintage Hawaiian puka shell necklace. The shells are totally natural including the holes. They were not on the beach in the sun long though as they still have their natural colors and stripes which the sun did not have time to bleach out.

Once pukas were popular, people were picking them up on the beach by the thousands and not waiting for the surf and sand to finish the job. The edges of the shells are still jagged and not smooth from the gentle time worn sanding that the ocean does to these shells.

These colored necklaces became very popular in their own right.  This one is 16 3/4" long and weigh 28.6 grams. Original fishing line with costume grade barrel clasp. Shells are 1/4" in diameter.,
